If you've brought food home from the grocery store that is still not quite ready to eat, you can speed up the ripening process by leaving food in a brown paper bag at room temperature.
Be sure to keep an eye on the fruit though, otherwise it could spoil before you have a chance to eat it.

yes brown bags keep the ethylene in, which is a gas that helps the fruit ripen. Also, if you put in ripe fruit with a piece of ripe fruit, like a ripe banana, the unripe fruit will ripen even faster because more ethylene is being produced by the ripe banana than the unripe fruit.
